Chaos Into Art - The Writer's Responsibility

These two writers (who couldn't be more different) say the same thing:

Human life itself may be almost pure chaos, but the work of the artist is to take these handfuls of confusion and disparate things, things that seem to be irreconcilable, and put them together in a frame to give them some kind of shape and meaning.
  --  Katherine Anne Porter

One writes out of one thing only--one's own experience. Everything depends on how relentlessly one forces from this experience the last drop, sweet or bitter, it can possibly give. This is the only real concern of the artist, to recreate out of the disorder of life that order which is art.
-- James Baldwin, Autobiographical Notes
